Welcome To Retire Your Way Radio - Episode 1

This is the Retire Your Way Radio podcast and I'm your host, Tim Doehrmann, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional in the Peoria, Illinois area, and my goal is to help you reduce taxes, optimize investments, and retire on your own terms

In this first episode, I talk about what you can expect in future episodes and why someone would want to work with a fiduciary. I also describe my backstory including how I went from running a hardware store to running a fiduciary, fee-only, registered investment advisor firm.

Why the Retire Your Way Radio Podcast?

This podcast will be used to communicate with clients and potential clients about all things related to retirement.

I was making YouTube videos but realized that my own personal form of content consumption is primarily via podcasts or audiobooks.  I listen to them while driving, at the gym, if I’m on a walk, while mowing and so on.

The name, Retire Your Way Radio was somewhat inspired by Frank Sinatra’s song, “My Way.”  Frank certainly lived his own way and our goal is to help you do the same!

Podcast Topics

I’m going to cover financial topics in the news, basic planning topics and answer any questions you may have. Usually if one person or a few people have a particular question, others may have the same question, and our audience may benefit from the answer too.

I’m going to try to keep these episodes brief since there are plenty of other outlets out there going after your attention. Each weekly episode will probably be between 5 and 15 minutes.  

This show is for educational and informational purposes only, and you should seek professional help for specific recommendations.  

What is a Fiduciary?

My firm is Eagle Ridge Wealth Advisors, and I am the owner and founder. We are a fiduciary, fee-only, registered investment advisor firm located in Illinois.  I know many people outside the industry don’t know what that means. Basically, a fiduciary is obligated to put the clients’ interests ahead of his or her own interests. 

The financial industry is peculiar in that advisors or insurance agents or brokers, or whatever they call themselves, are not legally bound to act in the best interests of clients. It’s really pretty crazy! 

I tell people looking for an advisor to look for a fiduciary, fee-only CFP® (certified financial planner). This isn’t to say that other types of advisors or agents aren’t providing value. It’s just a basic drawing line I know of to set people down the right path.  

About Me

I was born and raised in central Illinois, but I’ve been all over the world thanks to my 8-year stint in the Illinois Air National Guard and a propensity to travel. Here’s my backstory in a nutshell.

  • Graduated from Illinois State University.
  • Got my series licenses and was a registered representative at Waddell & Reed.
  • Was called to active duty and sent to aid in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
  • Moved to Missouri and became a real estate broker.
  • Moved back to central Illinois and opened an Ace Hardware store in 2006.  (I know, retail! What was I thinking?!)
  • Purchased a local Benjamin Moore Paint store and moved it into the hardware store in 2011.
  • Started my registered investment advisor (RIA) firm in 2013 as a side gig investing money for friends and family.  
  • Become a CFP to offer planning services as well as investment management. 
  • Sold the hardware store in 2018 to focus full-time on running my financial planning firm.

This firm is my real passion, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it leads.
